Haider Ackermann: Fashion Insiders’ Man of the Moment

SaksPOV sits down with Haider Ackerman to get the story behind the buzz

The Colombian-bred, Antwerp-trained Haider Ackermann has been the talk of the Paris collections for the last few seasons, but American women are still familiarizing themselves with the designer’s dramatic, sweeping, artful dresses, coats and pants. He recently came to New York to co-host a party at Saks’ Fifth Avenue Flagship, where Saks POV caught up with the man of the hour:

Saks POV: You’ve said that when you first started out, you, like many designers, were short on money. What has helped you succeed beyond those circumstances?
Haider Ackermann
: Dreams help you succeed. I was dreaming a lot when I first started. Of course when it comes down to it, there’s a lot of work that goes into it, and it’s also about having someone believe in you and give you strength.

POV: What is your idea of the perfect day?
H.A.:
Wake up at 6 o’clock in the morning, wander the streets, go for some breakfast and then start work feeling fresh and good.

POV: What have you been doing during your visit to New York?
H.A.:
I organized my trip so badly! I should have stayed two more days. The only free moment I had was the 45 minutes I took to take a look at the Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum. It really was so thoughtfully done – beautiful and touching.
