Designers Divulge Their Halloween Costumes to SaksPOV

— By Caroline Tell

Fashion designers are no strangers to costumes — dressing up is their livelihood, after all. But on Halloween all bets are off as designers such as Rachel Roy, Alice + Olivia’s Stacey Bendet, Chris Benz, Alexis Bittar and Vena Cava’s Lisa Mayock take time out from creating elegant runway looks to channeling ghouls, goblins or sometimes, a beloved Nintendo character. Here, the designers spill details of their out-of-the-box ensembles for October 31.

“I love any costume that passes along good energy, like an Indian god or goddess that embodies love and divine joy… or Deepak Chopra,” says designer Rachel Roy, who plans to spend Halloween with her daughters.

Alice + Olivia designer Stacey Bendet will tread less on the spiritual side of dress up and opt for some sexier options this Halloween. She’ll dress as either Marilyn Monroe or a vampire bride before heading to her friend’s house for what she calls “the most insane party each year.”

Though he’ll be in Tokyo on Halloween, Chris Benz took his inspiration from the south of Spain and will replicate the garb of the mighty Matador. The masculine choice is a far cry from his latter day looks.

My grandmother once made me a tarantula costume for scratch that was amazing,” says Benz. “It was stuffed with pillows and with giant antennae.”

The bug theme, however, may be seeing its renaissance, at least for Alexis Bittar, who plans on dressing up with friends as the city’s modern day plague — bed bugs. The jewelry designer will spend the day not infesting New York apartments, but watching kids trick or While Vena Cava designer Lisa Mayock is still conceiving a “beach community” getup, she admits her favorite part of Halloween is hanging out with common costume enthusiasts.

“Last year my boyfriend and I were Mario and Luigi, and we met two other Mario and Luigis and hung out with them most of the night,” she says.

Check out what designers dressed up as for Halloween in years past:  Chris Benz as a bell hop; Alice + Olivia designer Stacey Bendet played “make-believe” princess as a little girl; and Lisa Mayock channels Bruno.
