Marchesa’s Next Move

Georgina Chapman & Keren Craig launch Marchesa Voyage at Saks New York

If you were ever in need of an ultra-fab red carpet gown, Marchesa would be at the top of your list. Its prettier-than-pretty confections—dreamt up by founders Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig—are a celebrity go-to, after all. That said, Georgina and Keren can do casual-cool, too—and prove it with their new contemporary line, Marchesa Voyage. They stopped by Saks New York on Thursday to launch the new collection and chat about their partnership, inspiration, and gym wear (spoiler: not gonna happen). Who is the Voyage woman? Chapman: She’s relaxed, she’s globally minded, and she likes something a little glamorous but easy in attitude. Craig: For the first collection, we were looking at Istanbul. So you’ll see references—Georgina’s wearing paisley, there are cheetah prints, there are…

Craig: For the first collection, we were looking at Istanbul. So you’ll see references—Georgina’s wearing paisley, there are cheetah prints, there are florals…

How did you meet?
Chapman: We met in the [school] canteen. Keren and I have the same aesthetic. We’ve always liked the same things and we work well together. We each have our own areas and it just fits.

You’re known for glamorous red carpet dresses. Can either of you remember the last time you wore sweatpants?
Chapman: We don’t really do sweatpants. [Pointing to Keren’s cropped floral-print pants] These would be our version of sweatpants. It’s casual trousers for us!

Then what’s your idea of everyday chic?
Both: Voyage!

Thom Browne, Fashion Fantasist

The celebrated designer introduced his new collection exclusively at Saks New York

It goes without saying that Thom Browne has a flair for the dramatic….after all, Gothic fairy queens and Victorian asylum patients have sprung from his imagination and into wearable fantasies before. Luckily for American fashion, Browne’s Spring 2014 collection is no exception. The reverie du jour: Elizabethan clowns. Saks customers were the first in America to see the spring collection in an exclusive spring trunk show on Thursday at our New York store. Clad in one of his signature bespoke suits (cropped at the ankle, naturally), Browne mingled with customers and chatted about the methods to his distinct brand of madness. How do you envision your customer wearing these pieces?
Browne: I always feel like the customer should dictate when and how something should be worn. My true customer is someone who has the confidence to wear what they want, when they want.

What are you excited for people to see up close?
Browne: There’s so much time spent in the pattern-making, quality and the details, I feel looking inside of the garment is just as important as seeing the outside.

If not in fashion, where else would you be?
Browne: I feel like my shows are really stories that I put in front of people—so maybe directing? Stanley Kubrick’s style really interests me. His perspective was so uniquely diverse.

Finish this sentence:  I wish women would…
Browne: …wear what they feel suits them best, as opposed to opening a magazine and wearing what they’re told to.

SaksPOV: Your heroine in Wedding Night escapes to a Greek beach getaway for her dream honeymoon. Where’s your idea of perfect paradise?
Sophie Kinsella: For me, paradise is the beach too. White sand, warm sea and some shade is all I need. I go to Oman a lot and there’s a particular beach there that I love.

SaksPOV: What’s an essential you bring whenever you travel?
S.K.: I’m addicted to Crème de la Mer, so I always take it wherever I go. I have lots of little pots that I decant it into.

SaksPOV: Name a fashion splurge you’re planning this summer?
S.K.: I’m a sucker for summer dresses and this year I have my eye on a Milly fit-and-flare dress. I’ll get it in white, for a nod to the Grecian look!

SaksPOV: What are your favorite sunglasses? Oversized like Audrey Hepburn? Sleek aviators? Retro Wayfarers?
S.K.: I always go for oversized sunglasses – so glamorous – and I love a printed frame, especially tortoiseshell.

SaksPOV: If you were granted a Saks shopping spree, which department would you head for first?
S.K.: Shoes! Followed by bags! Followed by everything!

SaksPOV: Do you have a writing uniform?
S.K.: No, it’s just whatever feel like wearing. I often wear an exercise outfit in the hope that it will inspire me to workout when I’ve finished for the day. (Doesn’t always work…!)

SaksPOV: What’s the best part of your job?
S.K.: There are so many! Research is fun, finishing a book is amazing and meeting readers is one of my favorite parts. But the very best is that buzz you get when you have a new idea. Nothing beats it.

Case in point: Rahme has dedicated six Bond No. 9 New York scents in homage to the distinctive shores of New York with Sag Harbor, Montauk, Coney Island, Hamptons, Eau de New York and Fire Island. With summer just around the bend, we talked to Laurice about beach essentials.

SaksPOV: What do you love most about the summer?
Laurice Rahme: I love the scent of the flowers and fruits — the feeling and scent of sun on your skin, a deep blue sky and of course the feeling of freedom. I love dinners or cocktails outside in my private home or going out. Most of all I love that life takes place outside.

SaksPOV: Beaches have inspired many of your fragrances. What do you love about the beach — specifically what do you love about New York beaches?
L.R.: The New York beaches are so unique! So close to the energy and dynamism of Manhattan, yet so far away with the ocean lapping at your feet and the horizon way, way out over the sea. These beaches have a beautiful heritage that I love to celebrate and pay homage to with my scents — the history and liveliness of Coney Island, the sophistication of the Hamptons, the fun-filled quirkiness of Fire Island, the authenticity and old world feel of Sag Harbor.

SaksPOV: What is your favorite beach destination?
L.R.: I cannot say – they are all so unique and wonderful! I love them all!

SaksPOV: What are your fashion must-haves for a weekend at the beach?
L.R.: It depends on my mood and – of course – the weather! My essentials are hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. The rest is up to how I feel that day.

SaksPOV: How does your personal style vary on each beach?
L.R.: It is really my mood that inspires me anew every day.

SaksPOV: What is your favorite beach activity (reading, listening to music, swimming, etc.)?
All of the above! I enjoy time away from the hustle and bustle but at the same time I love spending time in the cafes, restaurants, and shops. I love life and enjoy being where it happens.

SaksPOV: Who do you like to go to the beach with?
L.R.: My friends and family! There is nothing better than a weekend in at the beach with big dinners outside and the scent of seawater in the air. That’s when life is light and carefree.

SaksPOV: What is the best way to incorporate fragrance in the summer?
L.R.: Wear what you love and what makes you feel free and confident!

SaksPOV: It’s 830 am, and you seem fairly chipper…
Tabitha Simmons: I wake up every day at 6am to get my kids ready for school, so this isn’t early for me at all!

SaksPOV: And it finally feels like springtime in New York. What is your favorite part of spring?
T.S.: The warm weather, absolutely!

SaksPOV: What will you be wearing this spring? Do you have any favorite styles from your collection in mind?
T.S.: I’m just so excited to be able to wear lighter shoes. I’ve been in boots and ankle boots for so long now. I’m going to wear these striped oxfords a lot!

SaksPOV: What is it like when you meet with customers?
T.S.:  It’s the greatest thing, honestly. I used to work at a shoe store — it was my first Saturday job. I love seeing what people like.

SaksPOV: What do you think when you see someone wearing your shoes?
T.S.: I still get excited! When I see someone wearing my shoes on the street, I accost them and say, “I made those shoes!”
