A South Beach Soirée for Phillip Lim

Saks Bal Harbour welcomed Phillip Lim with warm weather & a brand new boutique.

Far from the (still) blustery streets of New York, style enthusiasts gathered in balmy Miami to celebrate the opening of the 3.1 Phillip Lim boutique at Saks Bal Harbour. But this was no ordinary ribbon-cutting. Instead, the iconic Raleigh Hotel, smack dab in the heart of the South Beach’s Deco district, served as the perfect backdrop for guests to toast Lim and his geode-inspired spring collection.

While the designer schmoozed with guests, a performance by New York-based indie duo MS MR added an extra dose of city-cool. What could be better? Oh right, this: the evening benefited the National YoungArts Foundation, a charity devoted to discovering and aiding the next generation of artists. As the beachfront celebration came to a close, Lim chatted about his inspirations and how he spends his spare time (you know, when he’s not changing the fashion landscape).

There was a strong allusion to nature in your spring collection. What inspired a return to the elements?
Lim: There’s always a nod to nature and natural surroundings in the collections – I guess it comes from my California upbringing. I grew up by the water and living in New York now, that’s something I always reflect on.

As a designer, you’re well-immersed in the world of art & culture. What are you loving outside of fashion right now?
Lim: I’m renovating my apartment so I’m looking at marbles, textures and surfaces, fixtures and fittings all the time, it’s taken over my life! I’m also counting down the days for the weather to be warmer again so I can go paddle boarding again.

You’re thought of as a New York designer, but are you taking any fashion cues from your travels—both for work and pleasure—around the country and world?
Lim: Always – I try really hard to always be present wherever I am and that lends itself to being inspired by everything around me. It’s never really a literal reference though. I always try to translate things in a subtle way.

What advice would you give to someone breaking into the fashion industry right now? What advice did you hear when you were starting out?
Lim: I think now the only advice to give is that you will need to know exactly what you want to be – it’s really tempting to be led astray and also get wrapped up in everything so I always think that being grounded and focused makes for good advice, in any endeavor!

SaksPOV: Your heroine in Wedding Night escapes to a Greek beach getaway for her dream honeymoon. Where’s your idea of perfect paradise?
Sophie Kinsella: For me, paradise is the beach too. White sand, warm sea and some shade is all I need. I go to Oman a lot and there’s a particular beach there that I love.

SaksPOV: What’s an essential you bring whenever you travel?
S.K.: I’m addicted to Crème de la Mer, so I always take it wherever I go. I have lots of little pots that I decant it into.

SaksPOV: Name a fashion splurge you’re planning this summer?
S.K.: I’m a sucker for summer dresses and this year I have my eye on a Milly fit-and-flare dress. I’ll get it in white, for a nod to the Grecian look!

SaksPOV: What are your favorite sunglasses? Oversized like Audrey Hepburn? Sleek aviators? Retro Wayfarers?
S.K.: I always go for oversized sunglasses – so glamorous – and I love a printed frame, especially tortoiseshell.

SaksPOV: If you were granted a Saks shopping spree, which department would you head for first?
S.K.: Shoes! Followed by bags! Followed by everything!

SaksPOV: Do you have a writing uniform?
S.K.: No, it’s just whatever feel like wearing. I often wear an exercise outfit in the hope that it will inspire me to workout when I’ve finished for the day. (Doesn’t always work…!)

SaksPOV: What’s the best part of your job?
S.K.: There are so many! Research is fun, finishing a book is amazing and meeting readers is one of my favorite parts. But the very best is that buzz you get when you have a new idea. Nothing beats it.

Proceeds from the ticketed event benefited A Better Chicago, a venture philanthropy fund for the Chicago metropolitan area, which supports organizations that provide tools to underprivileged individuals to enter the workforce with an education and credentials.

Held at Terzo Piano at the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago, Herrera trotted about glamorous looks ranging from an astrakhan skirt with a fur-trimmed mink jacket evoking a modern day Katherine Hepburn, a trumpet skirted evening gown in color-blocked plum and crimson and the finale gown, an extraordinary long sleeved emerald evening gown in silk sating with a fur-trimmed plunging back.

“This collection has great drama and emotion,” noted Herrera in the show notes for this collection.

“We were delighted to present Carolina Herrera’s Fall 2013 runway collection, with a nod to 1940′s glamour, to our lovely ladies in Chicago,” said Saks Senior Fashion Director, Colleen Sherin. “ Mrs. Herrera never fails to present an ultra-chic collection with a high wearability factor for women of any age.”

After the show, Saks President Ron Frasch feted Herrera to a glamorous seated dinner, where they nibbled on Filet Mignon with a Roquefort crust and closed the evening with a sweet note with a lemon soufflé tarts.
