Laurice Rahme Works Her Magic

The founder of Bond No. 9 New York visits our flagship.

Everybody knows the story of the genie in the bottle, but what about the city in the bottle? Fitting one spirit into such a small space may be dismissed as fairy tale, but Laurice Rahme bottles a metropolis—all its character and attitude—as the founder of Bond No. 9 New York. Her scents capture the essence of NYC’s most vibrant neighborhoods (the High Line, Madison Square Park and Chelsea among them), but does she have a favorite? We asked her. How do you decide on a new neighborhood and its corresponding scent? Rahme: I only do neighborhoods I find interesting. If you really know the spirit of the neighborhood and the people who live there, it’s easy to do. What’s you favorite fragrance note? Rahme: Now…

How do you decide on a new neighborhood and its corresponding scent?
Rahme: I only do neighborhoods I find interesting. If you really know the
spirit of the neighborhood and the people who live there, it’s easy to do.

What’s you favorite fragrance note?
Rahme: Now it’s patchouli—it’s very warm, very attractive—and there
are many ways to work with it. But for spring, it’s gardenia.

What’s your favorite Bond No. 9 perfume?
Rahme: Coney Island. I love margaritas, and the first thing you smell
is Mexican lime and a tequila note. This fragrance has a party spirit.

Tell us about Saks New York Oud.
Rahme: People love it—especially in the winter. New York winters
are rough, and this fragrance is like a big cashmere sweater

What’s next for Bond No. 9?
Rahme: We’re doing a big new spring scent—Hudson Yards.

Aerin Lauder Looks Back…and Forward

The style maven introduces the AERIN Fragrance Collection at Saks New York.

For Aerin Lauder, granddaughter of Estée, daughter of Ronald and founder of her eponymous beauty and home label, childhood memories are surely sweet. But luckily for AERIN fans, they aren’t just nostalgia: they’re the jumping-off point for her debut fragrance collection. Aerin (with family in tow) celebrated the launch at Saks New York and told us about the moments behind the scents. Tell us about the memories that inspired these fragrances. Lauder: Lilac Path was inspired by a lilac bush at my house on Long Island, which was originally my grandmother’s. It’s beautiful…to me it defines spring and really captures that moment. Do you have a favorite fragrance from your collection? Lauder: I have to say, it’s Ikat Jasmine—I put it on every single morning…

Do you have a favorite fragrance from your collection?
Lauder: I have to say, it’s Ikat Jasmine—I put it on every single morning and then complement it with other scents for nighttime. It’s also inspired by my house, which is all blue and white because my grandmother loved those colors.

The holiday season is here—what are some of your favorite gift ideas?
Lauder: Candles are my go-to gifts—Jo Malone London and the AERIN collection are my favorites. Also, makeup bags. Women always want new ones!

What’s your easiest piece of style advice?
Lauder: Embrace what looks good on you. Just because something’s on-trend doesn’t mean you have to wear it. It’s really about reinforcing your natural beauty.

Kilian, Of Course

Kilian Hennessy brings his newest scent to Saks New York

The thing about temptation? It’s everywhere. So how do you capture something so mercurial? If you’re Kilian, it begins and ends with In The Garden Of Good And Evil, the revered perfumer’s tantalizing four-part fragrance collection. Celebrating the launch of the final addition, Playing with the Devil to his Good and Evil collection, Kilian Hennessy stopped by our New York fragrance floor last week to sign perfume bottles and chat with customers. In between photos and autographs, we got the scoop on Hennessy’s new fragrance and learned that the devil truly is in the details. Your latest scent: Playing with the Devil. Your latest scent: Playing with the Devil.
Hennessy: People who play with the devil also play with temptation, which I like. There’s a wink in the name, so I needed to find the same wink within the scent itself.  The fragrance contrasts between a lively opening made with blood orange essence, white peach and lychee, and a much more devilish, woodsy dry down.

How do you balance modern tastes and old-world artistry?
Hennessy: I have very limited distribution—it really gives me a freedom that others don’t have. What’s important is that my scent expresses the emotion carried by the name. That’s the only thing that interests me.

You’re in New York now…how would you bottle its scent?
Hennessy: It’s funny because we’re actually opening our own retail shop in America and it will have one exclusive scent called Apple Brandy, which is an homage to my cognac heritage and a wink to New York.

With a glitzy résumé that includes prepping beauties for fashion photography in magazines like Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone, plus grooming high profile stars like Jon Hamm and Chris Pine for their red carpet close-ups, La Mer Expert Groomer Kumi Craig knows absolutely everything about making skin look radiant. This summer she’s visiting Saks locations around the country to give personalized La Mer consultations. In the meantime, she’s shared tips to give you a jump-start on flawless skin.

Are there essential steps for every skin care program?
Everyone’s skin is different and it depends on each person’s skin concerns. I like to keep my regimen pretty simple and I encourage my clients to do the same. Everyone should incorporate a moisturizer into their routine and always use sunscreen.

Should men and women approach their skin care differently?
For the most part, the same goes for men and women. Men need to keep their skin fresh and hydrated, especially if they’re shaving. I recommend The Radiant Infusion as an aftershave and to hydrate the skin under a beard.

What are your absolute no-nos?
When I’m preparing men for a shoot or the red carpet, I never like to use foundation. Instead, I apply La Mer’s SPF 18 Fluid Tint in Dark, because it gives skin a beautiful healthy glow without looking like makeup. Natural looking skin is key.

What’s the best quick fix for stressed skin?
Hydrate and moisturize! The Mist really wakes up the skin—it’s like giving it a drink of water. For dark circles and puffiness, The Eye Concentrate with the silver tipped applicator is my go-to. I use it to massage under the eyes; it cools and gets the blood circulating. It really works!

Does the summer weather affect your skin care recommendations?
In a humid climate, skin doesn’t need a heavy moisturizer. I recommend The Moisturizing Gel Cream, a light, cooling option, for daily use. The Soleil de la Mer line with SPF 30 for the face, and The Reparative Body Sun Lotion are perfect for everyday.

Speaking of summer… To tan, or not to tan?
A little sun kissed glow is always nice, but never lay out without applying SPF.   I like a tan but no sunburns!
